On the advice of my mum, I bought a seed starter on the way home from work today.  There were a bunch of different options, but the one with the expanding sphagnum pellets looked like the most fun.  Not only do they grow from a flat little disk into a self-contained net pot that you can plant in the ground as-is, but sphagnum is just a fun word!  So I bought the Jiffy Professional Greenhouse at my neighborhood Lowe's.

Adding water to the sphagnum.

Isn't that awesome?!
The seeds just get planted right in there!

Chris and I planted our seeds; now all we have to do is wait for them to sprout.  Updates to come.

These seeds are just waiting to sprout!

Sorry, no tune today.  Instead, I've got some photos of my yard.  It's just too amazing and warm and green and springy outside to not celebrate with pictures!

Garden Woes

So I'm totally stressing out about my garden.  I am nowhere near as far along as I was last year.  April is almost over and I have planted exactly nothing.  Well, I planted some herbs in my herb box, but those don't count.  I'm talking about vegetables.

Over the weekend Chris and I went to Black Creek Greenhouse to buy vegetables in the hopes that it would stop raining for a day or two so we could move forward with our Garden Expansion plans.  Alas, it did not stop.  Well, it stopped today.  But we were at work and that didn't help anyone.  And it isn't supposed to rain tomorrow either, but we will be at work then as well and when we get home we have to mow the lawn (our grass is unbelievably long right now; it is embarrassing).  So I've got a bunch of seedling and seeds, but nowhere to go with them.  Right now they are sitting out on the side porch.  Just in case you did not watch my extremely fascinating haul video (it's actually very boring), let me tell you what we bought:

3 (yes, you read that correctly, three) raspberry bushes
2 cherry tomato seedlings (for Kylie since Chris and I don't eat tomatoes)
sweet corn seeds
green bean seeds
sugar pea seeds
lima bean seeds

Add to this list the seeds from the gardening gift basket Chris won at work last week:

broccoli seeds
beet seeds
radish seeds
cucumber seeds

So you can see why I am anxious to expand the garden.  These are way too many things to cram into our current tiny garden.  Perhaps I can just plant a few things and leave the rest for the new side.  Also, I wonder if I can plant those seeds indoors and let them grow a little before putting them outside.  I feel like that would waste less time.  You can see why I am so stressed out.

Tuesday Tunes

This song is pretty much perfect. Chris and I consider it to be somewhat the theme of our lives. You might listen to this song and think that's pretty sad, but we have a good time. Some of our favorite lines:

There's crusty socks
and stacks of pizza boxes
making trails straight to the bed.
And when we're done sleeping
we'll stay busy dreaming of the things
we don't have yet.
Well there's a long, long list of chores
and shit to do before we play,
oh let's just piss away the day
So come on over and knock on our door,
it's open whatchu waitin' for?
We might be sprawled out on the floor,
but we still make lovely company.
Pull up a chair, I'll pour some tea,
We'll shoot the shit, 'bout everything,
till you get sick of politics,
and flip on the TV screen,
we stare at the TV screen.

That Donnie Darko DVD has been repeating for a week,
and we know every single word.
I've got an iPod like a pirate ship,
I'll sail the seas
with fifty thousand songs I've never heard

Mutz update

Mutz's blood work came back normal.  So no-one really knows why every few months he get sick, stops eating, and vomits all over my house.  It is a mystery.  He seems fine now; he is eating again thanks to Kylie's introducing him to Petite Cuisine - the fanciest cat food I've ever seen.  Seriously, it looks like people food.  It smells like people food.  I told Mutz that he probably eats better than a lot of people in this country and he seemed pretty pleased with himself.

Sketch 15

A little while back, we listened to A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray at work. The book itself was a bit predictable and a littler weird, but I'd like to read the rest of the trilogy. I really enjoyed the imagery and was inspired to sketch Gemma, Felicity, Pippa, and Ann.

Sick Mutz

Today Kylie took Mutz to the vet for us while we were at work.  He's been throwing up and his ear was leaking and he isn't eating and he just generally doesn't seem right.  They didn't find anything immediately wrong with him, but they are doing blood work.  If it is something bad, we will hear from them tomorrow, but otherwise we will hear something on Monday.  So here's to hoping we do not get a call from the vet tomorrow.

Fake Gamesday

Fake Gamesday is a go!  For those of you who don't know, Fake Gamesday is exactly what it sounds like.  Since real Gamesday is in Chicago this year and none of us are willing to drive/fly all the way out there, we are just going to go to Baltimore for the weekend during the traditional Gamesday time period (mid April - mid May).  We had long ago (way back in December) decided to go on the weekend of April 15th, but a lot of things have happened in the intervening months and no-one had mentioned it since.  Time was rapidly ticking away and I was concerned we might not go at all.

But last night we finally made reservations!  Through the magic of Priceline, we got rooms at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel for a third of their regular price!  Amazing!  We have been lusting after that hotel for years (or at least I have), but we never stayed there because it was unreasonably expensive.  But no longer!  We were hoping the Name Your Own Price lottery would give us the Hilton, where we stayed last year, but this could be even better.  There is a mall attached to the hotel, a cool glass mall, and there is a sky walk to the inner harbor shops across the street.  How convenient!

It is a shame that we won't actually get to the real Gamesday to spend lots of money on Warhammer stuff, but think of all the cash that will free up for food!  And it also frees up time to go sight seeing!  Hooray!

Tuesday Tunes

Yes, yes, I know what you're thinking. Lame 80s song. Or, as Chris likes to say, grocery store music. But there's just something about this song that speaks to me in a way I can't explain.

Birthday Report

My birthday weekend went pretty much exactly as I had hoped.  Chris and I had "breakfast" - it was 2:00 in the afternoon - at Taste of Crepes.  Chris seemed to really enjoy it, which left me pleasantly surprised.  After we'd finished our crepes, we browsed the shops on Penn Ave, including The Last Level where we finally purchased Rock Band 3 (which we still haven't gotten a chance to play).  Then we went to see Insidious with Steve and Meghan.  After that we went to Buca with my favorite loaf* of friends.  When we had eaten our fill of roughly every food item on the menu, we headed to Kim and Dustin's house for punch and cake.  Check out the awesome cake Kim made for me - it's my twitter icon!

On Sunday we slept in quite late, then spent the afternoon watching South Park on Netflix.  We went over to mu parents' house for a delicious dinner of fried chicken, homemade macaroni and cheese, and asparagus.  This was finished up with an oreo ice cream cake and tea.  When we left, it was warm and raining and I got mu first whiff of Rain-Soaked Cement In The Summer, my favorite summertime scent.  Even the weather gave me a birthday gift.

*During dinner at Buca, we were discussing the weird names there are for groups of things (example - a murder of crows).  Someone declared that there had to be a group of somethings that was called a loaf.  Someone else decided that a group of friends should be called a loaf, and it just felt right.  So I immediately started adding this phrase into my everyday terminology.

Sketch 14

I just can't stop drawing Agatha Christie fan art. These are some of the female characters from Hickory Dickory Dock.

Today we went to see Insidious as part of my Birthday Celebration Weekend Spectacular.  We went to the Wyomissing theater since Steve has some sort of weird popcorn bucket that allows him to get cheap refills.

So anyway, the movie was pretty good.  I went into it expecting it to basically be Paranormal Activity 3, which would have been fine since I really enjoyed both 1 and 2.  But that's not quite the way things went.  The first half of the movie was very similar to the Paranormal Activities in that the scary things were only hinted at and everything was jumpy and tense.  But the second half was more full-on horror movie with the ghosts and demons and whatnot shown in full view on screen.  Which was fine, but again, not really what I was expecting.  Parts of it were pretty funny, this second half of the movie.  Not sure if that was on purpose or not.  The first half was rather depressing when it wasn't being scary.

I'd suggest seeing this movie if you enjoyed the Paranormal Activities movies, but don't expect it to be exactly the same.  And as such, don't expect it t be quite as good.  Unless you're also into typical horror movies, in which case this might be just your thing.

I am turning 27 this year, but still get inordinately excited about my birthday.  I know most people my age have stopped thinking about their birthdays entirely or, alternately, have come to hate birthdays, but I for some reason cannot control my glee.

It's weird, though.  It's not like I receive extravagant gifts or anything.  My tradition has become thus: dinner with friends on Saturday, dinner with my parents on Sunday.  It's not super exciting to most people I guess, but it is perfect to me.  I get an entire weekend of birthday celebrations with all of my closest friends and family.  What more could you ask for?

This weekend my plan is dinner at Buca with the guys (and their girls!) on Saturday night and homemade macaroni and cheese with my parents on Sunday.  We're also going to see Insidious on Saturday afternoon and I'm hoping to work some sort of breakfast plan in as well.  Perhaps breakfast on both days?  Mostly my birthday seems to revolve around food.  Weird.
