WIWW - Rainy Sunday

This is the outfit I wore on Sunday.  It was a rainy, dreary day - the perfect day for a messy bun and an oversized sweater.

Hair: sock bun
Sweater: bought at a yardsale from my sister's boyfriend
Jeans: Calvin Klein
Shoes: Boscov's

Tuesday Tunes

I love everything about this song except the bit with the robot voice.  That's just embarrassing for everyone.  But if you ignore that bit, this song is perfect.

Beef Barley Stew

Last Sunday, Kylie came over to watch Game of Thrones.  To set the mood, we decided to make a beef barley stew.  I wish I could tell you the recipe, because it was delicious, but alas.  My sister doesn't really measure in the kitchen.  So instead I'll just leave you with this photo of the finished product to make you jealous.

Sowing the seeds

On Saturday I did more gardening.  It was time to plant the corn, carrots, and beets.  They all do best when planted directly into the garden (instead of starting them inside), but they are less tolerant of cold weather than the sugar peas (which I planted a few weeks ago).  As I mentioned before, I used these charts to determine the best time to plant my seeds.  It's from a local greenhouse, so it's probably to find one tailored to your area if you don't live in Berks County, PA.

First, check out how far the aforementioned sugar peas have come!  Aren't they beautiful?  I don't think I'll ever tire of the thrill I get when something I've planted begins to sprout.

And while we're looking at green growing things, check out the raspberry bushes.  It's amazing to see a plant go from looking like a dead bunch of sticks to a living, thriving thing.  I think we're going to get a lot more
raspberries this year.  Just look at all those buds!

But anyway, back to seeds.  I had to do a little maintenance before I started planting my seeds.  There were some weeds to pull, and I turned the soil a bit, but other than that I just dug some shallow trenches, placed the seeds according to the spacing directions on their packaging, and covered them with dirt.  Then I watered them and the sugar peas and I was finished. Super easy.  So here is the garden as it stands now.  Not very impressive, I know.  But hopefully it will be brimming with life before too long.  I planted 12 corn seeds, 80 carrot seeds, and 12 beet seeds.  Probably went a little overboard with the carrots, but the seeds were really small.  It was mostly an accident.

I've decided I should start keeping a garden journal, so I made up some sheets for each of the vegetables I am growing this year.  I'm going to stick them in a three ring binder so that I can easily add to it as necessary.  I figure I'll also include some loose leaf line paper so that I can keep notes as to when I water, weed, and what sort of weather we have. This way I'll be better able to keep tracks of what works and what I need to improve upon for next year.

Seed Starting

I finally started my vegetable seeds inside on Friday.  I used a Jiffy Greenhouse seed starting tray, the same as last year. It's just so easy and convenient.  As a refresher, here's the list of vegetables I intend to grow this year.

Garden planning list
As you can see, some of them can be started inside and others do better when planted directly into the garden.  So the only things I had to start inside this year are cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, and cucumber.

Vegetable seeds!
I grew six each of the cauliflower and broccoli, but only one each of the zucchini and cucumber.  The cucumber is going to be put into a container, so that's why I only needed one.  The zucchini takes up a lot of space - I probably shouldn't have grown any at all.  They were on the list from back when I was planning on expanding.  But I didn't expand the garden, so I am just growing one now. But anyway, Jiffy trays.

Jiffy Professional Greenhouse 72 Plant Starter
They're really easy to use.  As you can see, there are self-contained little peat pellets that you can just take out and plant when your plants are ready.  They start out super flat.

When did my hands start to look so old?!
You just add water and wait.

Water pouring action shot!
After a little while your pellets will absorb the water and expand to their full size.

Plump with water.
Impressive, right?  Then you just plant your seeds as you would in any other dirt.  I use my finger to make a little hole, drop a seed in the hole, and cover it back up.  Doesn't get much easier than that.

Then you just put the lid back on, place the tray in front of a window, and wait until your seeds start to sprout.

Mako is a great helper.

So that's it.  Now we wait.  I dd some outside gardening on Saturday, but I'll save that for another post.  I figure I've bored you enough for one day!

Times Are Tough

List of things I did last week that were out of my comfort zone:

Skipped work on Wednesday even though payroll wasn't finished
Exited the highway from an exit I don't usually use
Parked in a parking garage
Talked to a hospital receptionist alone
Navigated the halls of the hospital alone
Exited the highway from another exit I don't usually use
Got out of the car in the DMV parking lot
Entered the DVM alone
Got my new drivers license photo alone
Went to a cashier at the grocery store instead of the self check-out
Threw out two bags full of old stuff from my office

You might think that some of these should be grouped together into one activity, but you are wrong.  I broke them down into the parts where I almost gave up and went home.  So each portion was its own tiny battle.
Still, I am pretty proud of myself.
